Hasedera Byōbu, 17th Century, Edo Period Artist - Anonymous

This rare, one-of-a-kind Byōbu, is a 6-panel piece from the late 17th century, Edo period portraying the main Hasedera Temple located in Nara, Japan.

One of the most ancient temples in Nara, Hasedera Temple was founded in AD 686, is often called the temple of flowers. The temple is perched near the top of a mountain, reached by a covered stairway, lined with stone lanterns and flowers. Hasedera Temple has thrived since as one of the centers of the Shingon Buddhist sect. The main statue inside the temple is the eleven-faced Kannon, a beautiful and imposing example of the Muromachi sculpture carved from a local camphor tree.

The Hasedera Temple has also been known for its beautiful scenery during spring and autumn season in Japan. In spring, hundreds of cherry blossoms bursts into bloom and in autumn, the red Momiji leaves mimic the red lacquered wood.

The Hasedera temple in Nara was established to enshrine the Kannon statue, and this very piece portrays the inception of it during the early Edo period. The Hase Kannon faith has spread throughout Japan, and to this day thousands of people come for Hasemode, worshiping at the Hasedera Temple.
